James 4:7 – “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you”. (Source)
I sometimes ask myself about what this means. What does it mean to surrender to the Lord? It is denying ourselves. Plain and simple. This is a good thing, to deny ourself when it comes to obedience to God. This is because we are putting His desires over ours. Can you imagine a relationship with our Lord if we were putting our desires over His? I can’t. I know the times in my life I put my desires over His I felt empty inside. Even when I was attaining goals that I wanted. It didn’t necessarily mean they were His desires for me at the time. A life to me without God is an empty life.
One thing when complete surrender happens with God, is we resist the devil. The more we surrender, the more resistance builds up against the devil. I know that God always waits for us to return. I can recall a time when I was younger and all I wanted to do was get back into basketball after an injury. I wanted to be part of something where people would admire my abilities. That is what “I” wanted. So of course I went against what was being told to me and went back into playing before I should have. I ended up not being able to play much. Although people liked what I was doing and I was getting that attention, I felt empty inside, even as a teen. I didn’t really comprehend it at the time. Comparing it now as an adult as I went through things earlier on as an adult and not submitting to what God wants, I realized that it all tied together. I wasn’t submitting to God. Like fully submitting to God.
My wife is amazing. She runs two companies and she was struggling. She confessed to me as she was going through her trials that she had not fully given up her path to God. She gave everything to God and submitted to Him. Now while she is not booming in her business, she is in a much better place with her business. This is what it is all about. I have learned over the years that God MUST come first. He has such a perfect design for us all. To think that He thinks about each of His children individually and able to make perfect plans for all of them are unfathomable. There are billions of children He has. I must say I feel special to be one of His billions of children that He is able to take the time to make a perfect plan for. I guess this is a perfect example that is set for us. However, it all starts with the complete and unreserved submission to our Lord!
Until next time my brothers and sisters in Christ, God bless!
